We had a great Thanksgiving! I was SO nervous about making such a huge/important meal, but it went well.
We got up, got ready, and then got to work. I made about half of our food the day before, so we didn't have much to get ready on Thanksgiving. We turned the parade on and I started getting our turkey ready. As you may be able to tell, I was less than thrilled to stick my hands in the bird and pull everything out.

While Mr. Turkey was cooking, I got to work on our green bean casserole, gravy and stuffing. I underestimated how long each of those would take and everything was ready before the turkey was! Whoops.
When he decided to be done, he sure looked good!

Darren took over carving duties, and had fun doing it ;)
We were excited to use our "good" dishes that Mom and Dad Capell gave us for Christmas last year, as well as some incredible silverware from Darren's aunt and uncle. It was fun to be a little fancy!
Our spread
After we ate to our heart's content Darren set out to find the wishbone. It took us a while, but we finally found it and cleaned it off, just so we could break it in two.
Darren and our wishbone
Much to Darren's dismay, I came off conqueror. Muah ha ha.

We took a break for a while, changed into sweats (jeans have no give!) and watched football until we had more room for pie.
Since there were only two of us we decided to make only one pie, and since I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin (I'll eat it, but it's not my first choice) we made a French Chocolate Silk. And let me tell you, it turned out fantastic! I just love stuffing my face with chocolate. Truth be told, there were a number of tears shed for this pie. You are actually looking at attempt #2, after #1 didn't set due to liquidy butter. #2 has a broken crust, but I sucked it up and used it. Darren had no idea Thanksgiving was going to cause so much drama.
Our delish pie
We wish we could have spent Thanksgiving with family, but we were grateful to be somewhere we could spend it together. My dad called me on Friday to let me know that my grandparents (who we were supposed to visit) had gotten 5 inches of snow on Thanksgiving, and were going to be getting more that day. They told him that we made the right decision to stay in Idaho Falls. If we had gotten up there, we probably would not have been able to get out safely until Sunday or Monday.
We are grateful for so many things, but mostly our families and Darren's job that provides for us each day. We are excited to see Darren's family in just two weeks, but will miss spending Christmas with my family. 'Til next year!
WOW I'm impressed! I was thinking to myself the other day, I don't think I'll ever actually do a real turkey. Turkey breasts maybe, Ground Turkeky, sure... but pulling guts out of a whole turkey? With bones and stuff? Probably not.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you guys look great! gNat - you look so much like your mom, you look gorgeous :)
Awe, Jeff and I think that you guys are SO DARLING!!! I read him this entire post and we really miss you guys living close. Natalie, I love that you make a big deal about the important things. The things that you think are important are the things I usually make a big deal about. The parade for instance...a MUST for Thanksgiving!!! Anyways, cute hair by the way...and Darren, Jeff was commenting how good you look too. He thinks it's funny that Eric's the biggest now! LOL!
ReplyDeleteProps to you for cleaning out that turkey! I made Jay do that part. Normally I don't mind working with raw meat that much, but something about a raw turkey was extra gross to me. Maybe because it still resembles its original self.
